80th birthday celebrations

Univ Professor Pogge Von StrandmannA Dinner was held in College on Saturday 13 October in honour of Professor Hartmut Pogge Von Strandmann, Emeritus Fellow and Professor of Modern History, on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

Around 50 former students, family and friends gathered for the celebrations – some of whom had travelled from Austria, Germany and Ireland for the event. Professor Pogge Von Strandmann and his former student, Professor Robert Gerwarth (1997, History), Professor of Modern History at University College Dublin and Director of the UCD Centre for War Studies, gave speeches.

Professor Pogge Von Strandmann joined Univ in 1977. He was Professor of Modern History from 1977 to 2005. He recently edited, with Andreas Gestrich, Bid for World Power? New Research on the Outbreak of the First World War, (OUP, May 2017) a publication that revisits the Fischer controversy, one of the most important scholarly debates in twentieth-century historiography.
