Autumn USPGA meeting 2018

Martin Matthews presenting a prizeWe were delighted to welcome all Univ Golfers to Frilford Heath Golf Club for the autumn meeting, kindly hosted by Martin Matthews, Emeritus Fellow. We are grateful to Mr Matthews for the following report.

Fourteen members of the USPGA arrived at Frilford Heath Golf Club on 2 October 2018 to take on the Red Course. It was a predominantly cloudy day, though patches of blue sky were evident later in the day, and the breeze also picked up as time went by. The breeze, coupled with fast and firm, albeit fair, greens, made the Red Course quite a stern test of golf with the best score being returned by Tony Leak (1978, Law) who was, accordingly, presented with the USPGA Trophy.

Martin Matthews presenting a prizeTony was one point ahead of David Laycock (1970, Medicine). The “Longest Drive” competition on the 8th hole resulted in a victory for Nick Smith (1976, English & Education). The other competition (“Nearest the Pin”) was on the 11th hole. Such was the golfing prowess on display at this hole that only one player (William Roth) managed to persuade his golf ball to get onto the green and (crucially) remain there ( and to his great credit he holed the ensuing putt).

The host on that occasion was Nick Smith who kindly gave the 2018 attendees an interesting talk on links between Univ, Frilford Heath GC, the Inter- College Alumni Tournament and the USPGA, whilst also mentioning Univ’s earlier connections with two great names of the golfing world (J H Taylor and Cyril Tolley).
