Thank you for considering making a gift to the College; we warmly welcome and encourage participation at any level.
Gifts can be directed to an area of College that matters to you most, usually within one of three areas: supporting people, supporting College programmes or enhancing facilities. Full detail on how your gift can make a difference to Univ can be found on the Your Impact page.
Give online today
Individual contributions can be made online via most debit and credit cards.
To sustain and advance Univ’s special tradition of learning and scholarship, the College needs the dedicated support of its Old Members. Each donation, regardless of its size, will have an impact on some aspect of our community. Find out more about Univ’s Annual Fund.
“Univ’s funding provides a platform for all the best students from around the world to work in collaboration and push each other towards our goals.” – James Barwick-Silk (2014, Chemistry)
Leaving a Legacy - The William of Durham Club
Legacies are an enormously important source of funds for the College. To find out more about making a provision for Univ in your will please see the PDF documents below:
- Leaving a Legacy
- Legacy Sample Wording – UK Taxpayers
- Legacy Sample Wording – US Taxpayers
- Legacy Sample Wording – Canadian Taxpayers
Those who have made a legacy or any other planned gift to Univ are invited to join the William of Durham Club, established in 1997. Members are invited (with a guest) to an annual day at Univ, which is the College’s way of expressing its gratitude to those who have chosen to make provision for Univ in their will. Of course, if you would prefer for us to do so, we can also keep your bequest to the College anonymous.

Univ Old Members’ Trust (OMT)
Univ is unique in Oxford in having two separate endowments to support the College. The College’s own endowment is the first of these; the second is the Univ Old Members’ Trust (OMT); further details of the trust can be read in this PDF document.
The 1249 Society was established to recognise and thank Old Members who make significant contributions to Univ’s Annual Fund year after year. Gifts at leadership level provide an invaluable source of support to the College and strengthen vital initiatives and projects that directly impact our students.
As a member of the 1249 Society, you will receive:
- Special recognition in the annual Roll of Donors
- Invitations to two exclusive 1249 Society events per year
- A commemorative 1249 Society pin, which will be issued annually as you renew your membership
- Advance notice on events and, in certain cases, priority booking
- An annual 1249 Society e-newsletter, providing inside information on what’s happening in College today and how your gifts are being directed
There are various annual membership levels according to age with amounts based on the College’s founding year, 1249. If your annual giving reaches or exceeds £1,249 (including Gift Aid) within the fiscal year (1st August – 31st July), you will be welcomed as a 1249 Society member for the year in which your gift is made. For those aged under 30, the annual membership level is £124.90, and recent leavers need to give only £12.49 to become members.
Maximising the Value of Your Gift
There are various ways in which you can increase the value of your gift, either through tax-efficient methods or matching schemes that are available.
1 – Gift Aid
Both regular and single gifts can be made tax-efficiently in the UK simply by checking the Gift Aid declaration box when giving online, or by completing the declaration on the Gift Form. This enables us to claim an additional 25% from the Government for your gift while higher rate tax-payers can themselves claim 20% tax relief on their gross donation. For further information about Gift Aid, please visit the HM Revenue & Customs website.
2 – Gifts of Shares
Giving via shares is one of the most tax efficient ways of making a charitable gift. As such, it is a great way to support Univ and may enable you to do more for the College than you could via a cash donation. Find out more in our Donating Shares to Univ PDF.
3 – Corporate Matching Gifts
Many companies now match donations made to charity by their employees, either pound for pound, or in some cases, even a double-match. Matching gifts usually require a simple form from your Human Resources department that you send to us for confirmation. If your employer is not included in the list of Matching Gift Companies PDF, please contact your HR department to find out whether they participate.
4 – Give As You Earn
Give As You Earn (GAYE) enables employees to give to charities such as Univ and/or the Old Members’ Trust directly from their payroll, before tax. Some employers also operate a generous GAYE topping-up scheme (similar to matching gifts), increasing the value of your monthly gift by an agreed percentage. Please contact your HR department to find out more about GAYE. Please note that the College and the OMT are unable to reclaim any tax from the Government on the GAYE donation made. CAF (Charities Aid Foundation) usually deduct an administration fee of 4% from the amount donated, except when the employer has kindly agreed to cover these charges. When completing the form, please ensure you quote the full name of your preferred charity: “University College Oxford” and/or “Univ Old Members’ Trust”. Further details are available from CAF E: email@example.com T: +44 3000 123 000
5 – Moritz-Heyman Matching Scheme
In 2012, the University of Oxford received a significant pledge of £75 million, from Christ Church alumnus Michael Moritz and his wife Harriet Heyman, towards the funding of bursaries for the most financially disadvantaged undergraduate students. The gift will be made to the University in three instalments of £25 million, the first of which has already been received. Each subsequent instalment is conditional upon the collegiate University raising a further £50 million for undergraduate student support. A gift to the College, directed to undergraduate student support, will count towards this challenge. To learn more about the Moritz–Heyman Scholarships visit ox.ac.uk
“I always love coming back to Univ – it feels like coming home in a way. One of the really cool things about Univ is that you feel like you are part of a family.” – Nadia Odunayo (2010, BA PPE)
