Chapel

The Chapel Community

Just as the Chapel occupies a central position in the College – next to the Hall, with its beautiful painted glass windows overlooking the front quad – so too it plays an important part in collegiate life.

Its worship and other activities provide a space for reflection for people of all faiths and play an important role in our common life. Thus the Chapel welcomes not only those who are practising Christians but all who might wish to explore questions of ultimate significance. Together we seek to engage seriously but critically with the claims of the Christian faith while not forgetting the competing claims of the multi-faith and multicultural world in which we live.

The Chaplain

The Revd Dr Andrew Gregory, the Chaplain, is readily available to all members and staff of the College. He is often one of the first people to whom students go in times of trouble or anxiety. Information about his role, and his academic research, can be found on his personal page .

Services in Chapel

Services in Chapel are open to all college members and staff, their guests and friends, and to members of the public. Our services are according to those of the Church of England, but all are welcome to participate in our worship, or simply to visit or pray in the Chapel, regardless of tradition or denomination. The Chapel can be used for prayer or quiet contemplation at any time. (When the Chapel is locked the key can be borrowed from the Porters’ Lodge.)

The main service each week in term time is Choral Evensong each Sunday at 5.45pm. The choir sings and the service includes a sermon, often by a visiting preacher.

Other services are as follows:

Sunday 9.00-9.35am
Eucharist (only during term; followed by breakfast)

Monday to Friday 8.40-8.55am
Daily Prayer

Once a term there is a midweek communion service, followed by supper, to which all fellows, junior members and staff are invited.

Choral and Organ Scholars

The college takes great pride in its organ and choral scholars and offers them its full and enthusiastic support.

The Chapel Building

The history of the Chapel at Univ is long and wonderfully rich. Work began on the building back in 1640 and the most recent major renovation to the Chapel was in 1955, with the complete reconstruction of the organ.
