Neel Mukherjee Shortlisted for The Goldsmiths Prize
University College alumnus Neel Mukherjee (1992, English) has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2024 Goldsmiths Prize for his latest novel, Choice. Recognised as one of the most inventive awards in British literature, the Goldsmiths Prize was established in 2013 to celebrate fiction that pushes the boundaries of the form, rewarding works that show creative daring and redefine storytelling. This annual £10,000 award aims to honour novels that embody true innovation, defy expectations, and reimagine the possibilities of narrative. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, 6 November, with Mukherjee’s Choice among the standout finalists.
Born in Calcutta and educated at institutions including Oxford and Cambridge, Mukherjee has gained acclaim for his insightful exploration of the lives of underrepresented characters caught in the complexities of a globalised world. His previous novels, such as The Lives of Others, which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and A State of Freedom, have earned him numerous accolades, including the Encore Award. These works reflect his overarching concern with themes of identity, freedom, and the often harsh realities faced by the marginalized.
In Choice, Mukherjee continues to delve into these significant themes, intertwining personal narratives with broader social and political contexts. His ability to illuminate the intricate dynamics of human relationships amidst societal constraints has solidified his reputation as a powerful voice in contemporary literature.
The College community extends its warm congratulations to Neel on this noteworthy achievement and wishes him the best of luck as the award ceremony approaches.
