A rare first edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Pets & their People covers everything from creative depictions of animals in literature, as seen in Lewis Carroll’s personal copy of a rare first edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland containing original illustrations by John Tenniel, to a Dickin medal, which was created during World War II to honour animals involved in conflict.

Visitors can also take in historical artefacts such as a papyrus scroll from Ancient Egypt that served as an early version of a tax disc and congestion charge document for a camel, as well as more modern non-biological pets such as soft toys and virtual pets.

College cat in Bodleian ExhibitionIn recognition of the animals who are associated with Colleges and other University buildings and departments, the exhibition features a screen showing various College Companions. It is here that visitors can see Lyra, Univ’s College cat, on display.

Lyra joined Univ in September 2021 and was named by the College community in a vote shortly after her arrival. She can often be found in Radcliffe Quad or nestled in the Porter’s Lodge.
