Lamentations

The Penitent Magdalen, Georges de la TourFigure, the historical performance ensemble founded by Frederick Waxman (2014, Experimental Psychology), presents its newest offering, Lamentations, on 10 April, 2025 at Stone Nest, Soho.

Lamentations is a reflective exploration of loss and renewal constructed around Couperin’s Leçons de Ténèbres. The intimate performance of words and music for Easter will feature BBC Radio 3’s Donald Macleod, who will read a selection of poetry and prose, gambist Liam Byrne, sopranos Rachel Redmon and Claire Ward, and Figure’s Founder and Co-Artistic Director Frederick Waxman.

Founded in 2021, Figure aims to improve access to music across the Classical repertoire by presenting imaginative and immersive experiences free from traditional formalities in stimulating venues. By exposing audiences to the context, atmosphere and passion of the pieces, Figure’s performances implement a historical approach designed to engage audiences in Classical music.

Previous performances have included a reimagining of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, a collection of Contemporary and Baroque string music, an immersive multi-generational production of the Stabat Mater by Pergolesi, and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream accompanied by Mendelssohn’s enchanting incidental music.
