Holly James Johnston’s new podcast

graphic with two people and the words Into the World Inverted between themHolly James Johnston’s (2019, English) new podcast series Into That World Inverted is out now on Spotify and Apple podcasts. The six-part podcast, presented in the style of a road trip, explores LGBTQ places past and present.

Presented by Holly James Johnston and Dr Diarmuid Hester (University of Cambridge), the podcast follows the pair as they tour the South East of England, taking listeners to iconic places like Sissinghurst Castle and Prospect Cottage. At each stop on their road trip, Holly and Diarmuid meet with experts and artists who help bring a cast of vibrant historical queer figures, including Vita Sackville-West, Derek Jarman, and Henry James, to life.

As much a pilgrimage as it is a road trip, the podcast explores ideas about queer community and kinship, space and space-making, what it meant to be queer in the past, and what it means to be queer now.

Holly is currently at Univ completing their DPhil in English. Alongside their academic work, Holly has presented short films for Tate and The National Gallery. Holly also performs as a drag king under the name Orlando – an unruly dandy with foppish hair and a painted face.
