The Worlds of Christian Cole
Philip Burnett, a former Assistant Librarian at Univ, will follow the path which Christian Cole, the first Black African to be awarded an Oxford Degree, followed from Sierra Leone, to Oxford, to Zanzibar and explore how he was shaped by and shaped the worlds of these very different places.

Christian Cole’s Univ
Dr Robin Darwall-Smith (1982, Classics), Archivist of Univ since 1993, will discuss what kind of place Univ was in the 1870s, with special reference to our then Master, George Bradley, who was a great supporter of Christian Cole.

12pm Exhibition:

Christian Cole in Oxford
This will include Cole’s entry in our Admissions Register, as well as a pamphlet written by him on the Zulu Wars. We will also display two remarkable cartoons of Cole recently acquired by the College. Visitors are warned that a modern audience may find them offensive, but they are of great significance to the history of Black Oxford.
