New lift improves access to the WCR
A new lift has been installed at the College’s Mitchell Building. The lift provides greater accessibility to the upper floor of the building, which houses the Weir Common Room (WCR).
The Mitchell Building, located behind the Old Library, was opened in June 1971 and named in honour of Sir Harold Mitchell (1919, History). It houses the College Works department on the ground floor, along with a kitchen space. The first floor is occupied by the WCR and includes a comfortable lounge and a fully equipped kitchen. The WCR serves as a regular meeting space for the College’s graduate community and is a venue for numerous events such as socials, discussion groups and drinks receptions.
The building was originally proposed in 1968, on the site of an old cottage. It was designed by John Fryman of the Architects Design Partnership and was named after Sir Harold Mitchell (1919, History), the benefactor who generously covered the cost of the building’s construction. You can read more about the history of the Mitchell Building here.
The installation of the lift in the Mitchell Building has been made possible thanks to the support of a group of Univ Old Members from 1970 and 1971, who responded to our Golden Anniversary Campaign in 2022. We are tremendously grateful to them for their kind gifts, which will make such a difference to current and future members of the College.
