A statement on our 2020 intake

17 Aug, 2020: Please note an update statement can be read here.

Congratulations to the many students who have secured the A Level results they needed to progress to their chosen university. Here at Univ, we’re very much looking forward to welcoming our 2020 intake to the College.

Though many students are celebrating, others are bitterly disappointed, having been assigned lower grades than their teachers predicted.  All students have been affected by the pandemic, and some who were not assigned their predicted grades are asking whether this was a result of the way in which A Level grades were calculated this year, rather than a true reflection of their academic performance.

At Univ, we have adopted a clement approach to those who were not assigned the necessary grades in as many cases as we reasonably can.  We have been particularly mindful of the disproportionate impact the pandemic is likely to have had on the educational opportunities of, and the A Level grades assigned to, those who come from socio-economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. Other Oxford colleges have exercised clemency in the same way, and like other colleges we will be pleased to offer a deferred place to unsuccessful offer-holders who are assigned the necessary grades as the result of an appeal.

We have a very full and a very diverse first year.  As in every other year, we’re striving for equality of opportunity, and we believe that equality of opportunity is essential to ensuring academic excellence.  We look forward to providing a challenging and rewarding university experience to all our new first years.
