John Albery Memorial LectureThis year the Royal Society of Chemistry’s John Albery Memorial Lecture was delivered by Professor Phil Bartlett FRS (1974, Chemistry), Professor of Electrochemistry at the University of Southampton. Professor Bartlett is Head of the Electrochemistry Section at Southhampton and served as President of the International Society of Electrochemistry 2017-18.

His research focuses on the templated electrodeposition of nanostructured materials and on bioelectrochemistry. He has won a number of awards for his research including the 1992 Tajima Prize from the International Society of Electrochemistry, 2008 Electrochimica Acta Gold Medal of the International Society of Electrochemistry, 2014 Alessandro Volta Medal of the Europe Section of the Electrochemical Society, 2015 Galvani Medal of the Electrochemistry Division of the Italian Chemical Society and the 2017 Breyer Medal of the Electrochemistry Division of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2012.

Professor Phil Bartlett

The John Albery Memorial lecture is delivered by a scientist who has made a substantial contribution to fundamental electrochemistry. It was inaugurated by the Electrochemistry Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2014 and the first lecture was given by Tim Albrecht of Imperial College and now Professor at the University of Birmingham. The second of the biennial series was given by Prof Serge Lemay, University of Twente. The third lecturer in 2018 was Prof Rolf Schuster of the Karslruher Institute of Technology.
