University College is delighted to congratulate Professor Laura Herz, Supernumerary Fellow in Physics, on receiving the 2024 Institute of Physics (IOP) Michael Faraday Medal and Prize. You can read more here.
University College is proud to announce the completion of a new book by Professor Polly Jones, the Schrecker-Barbour Tutorial Fellow in Slavonic and East European Studies and Professor of Russian. You can read more here.

University College Honorary Fellow Christina Lamb OBE (1983, PPE) has received the esteemed Chesney Gold Medal from the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), recognising her exceptional contributions to war journalism and the field of international security. You can read more here.
A testament to English academia’s symbiotic relationship with empire and the totalising effect of translation in a colonial context, it is little wonder that in R.F. Kuang’s novel Babel it is through a secret tunnel beneath Flaxman’s memorial that the radical anti-imperial Hermes society is accessed. You can read more here.
University College alumnus Neel Mukherjee (1992, English) was shortlisted for the prestigious 2024 Goldsmiths Prize for his latest novel, Choice. You can read more here.
University College alumni Lukas Köbis (2013, MMaths, MCompSci) and Taimur Abdaal (2013, MMaths) have been named to Forbes’ prestigious 30 Under 30 list in the “Big Money” category, recognising their achievements as Cofounders of Causal. Read more.
Professor Colin T Reid (1976, Law) has been awarded the prestigious Legal Pioneer Award by the Law Society of Scotland, recognising his outstanding contributions to environmental law. Read more.

Student News
An immersive production of Shakespeare’s Othello was staged in University College Hall between 9 and 12 November. Many of the cast and crew were Univ students. The director, C. Zhang (2022, English) has written an afterword here.
In Brief
One of the UK’s leading satirical comedians, Andy Zaltzman (1993, Classics) has embarked on the biggest stand-up tour of his career to date. “The Zaltgeist” will assess the state of Planet Earth and its most famous and controversial species – the human race. Commotio, the chamber choir founded and conducted by Univ Old Member Matthew Berry (1995, Music), present a programme of music for Advent on Christmas at St John the Evangelist on the Iffley Road, on Saturday, 30 November at 7.30pm. Read more.
Dr Alexander (Xa) Sturgis (1982, History), Director of the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, was quoted in a BBC article recently on the news that the Ashmolean has raised almost £4.5m to save a rare crucifixion painting by artist Fra Angelico – believed to be the earliest surviving painting by the artist.
