College News
On Sunday 15 September, in collaboration with the Oxford Preservation Trust, Univ took part in Oxford Open Doors, which sees many of Oxford’s historic and iconic buildings opened to the public. You can read more here.
The discovery of a fragmentary papyrus containing substantial sections (ninety-seven lines of Greek) of two plays of Euripides has caused a splash in the world of Classics. You can read more here.
On Friday 20 September, Univ opened its doors to welcome prospective students and their supporters as part of the University’s annual Open Days. You can read more here.

Commotio, one of Oxford’s foremost chamber choirs, founded and conducted by Univ Old Member Matthew Berry (1995, Music) held a free concert in Oxford on 28 September to celebrate their 25th anniversary. You can read more here.
On Friday 20 September, Univ once again took part in the University of Oxford September Open Day. The weather generally stayed dry, but the risk of rain and a decrease in temperatures meant that our wonderful tortoise Percy “worked from home” that day, choosing to stay under his heat lamp over meeting prospective applicants. Once again members of the Colleges and the University are supporting the Oxfordshire Homeless Movement through the CEO Sleepout on World Homeless Day, 10 October 2024. You can read more here.

Alumni News
Meeting Minds is a stimulating weekend of academic talks and tours organised by the University for Oxford alumni. There are a wide variety of live talks, panels and tours on offer, plus opportunities to network with fellow alumni. This year’s Meeting Minds took place from 20-22 September, and featured a number of Univ Old Members and Fellows. You can read more here.
Monica Youn (1993, English), Univ alumna and Rhodes Scholar, was in conversation with Topé Folarin (Texas and Harris Manchester, 2004) in a virtual event organised by the Rhodes Trust on 18 September. The conversation was part of the Rhodes Trust Scholars’ Library Series. You can read more here.

Travel Reports
Catherine Baldwin (2023, DPhil Earth Sciences) recently completed the Mountain Training Mountain Leader (ML) training week in a very wet and windy Eryri National Park, supported by the Old Members’ Trust Graduate Conference and Academic Travel Fund. The ML certification is designed for people wanting to lead groups in UK mountains, hills, and moorlands. You can read more here
Samuel Lam (2022, CDT Mathematics of Random Systems) attended the 12th International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR), one of the most prestigious conferences on machine learning. Nearly 6,000 academics and industrial partners with diverse academic backgrounds gathered in Vienna to discuss the latest advancements in the fields. You can read more here.
Jessica Pavert (2023, MSc Archaeology) visited the Chalet des Anglais this year, supported by The Nethercott Chalet Travel Fund. Jessica reports on the trip, which took place over ten days, with an alternating schedule of hiking and reading days, creating a balanced and relaxing routine. They embarked on several hikes, including up Tête Noir, the Prarion, Col de Tricot, Tête Rousse, and the Gorges of Diosaz. You can read more here.
Thanks to generous funding from the trustees of the Old Members’ Trust Undergraduate Conference and Academic Travel Fund, Jonathan McDowell (2022, History) was able to take a five-day trip to Barcelona in July 2024 to access archival material on the oral history of the Spanish Civil War. Treasures
The Univ Library team was delighted to present their exhibition, From Alchemy to Anatomy, at this year’s St Cuthbert’s Dinner festivities. The exhibition laid out thirteen of the most historically significant and visually stunning items from the College’s History of Science collection of early printed books. You can read more here.

In Brief
Dr Jack Andrews, Stevenson Junior Research Fellow in Medical Sciences (Psychology), published a paper, Andrews, J. L., Astle, D. E., Jones, J. S., & Blakemore, S. J. (2024). “Mapping the role of sexuality in adolescent mental health and substance use.” Royal Society Open Science, 11(6), 230955. Dr Andrews was invited by the Royal Society to attend the 2024 Frontier in Science Meeting in Johannesburg to foster collaboration with science being conducted in South Africa, and Africa more broadly.
Professor Sarah Harper CBE, Supernumerary Fellow, Clore Professor of Gerontology and Director of the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, joined presenter James Gallagher and a panel of experts at the Hay Festival on 31 July to discuss the biology of aging and what we can all do to help ourselves age well. The conversation was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Inside Health: How can we age well?
Celebrated neurosurgeon and writer Henry Marsh CBE, FRCS (1969, PPE) was in conversation with Mariana H at the Hay Festival in September. Henry Marsh is the author of, among other books, And Finally. Matters of Life and Death, which tells of his experience as a cancer patient.
Nadia Odunayo (2010, PPE), Founder and CEO of The Storygraph (a fully-featured Amazon-free alternative to Goodreads), took part in a live ‘Ask Me Anything’ session, hosted by DiscoLink, on 17 September.
