Devas Club welcomes The Master

Valerie Amos with boxing coach Malik Owusu

On Thursday 17 November, Valerie Amos, Master of Univ, put on the boxing gloves during her first visit as the newest trustee to the 138-year-old Devas Youth Club in Battersea.

The club was founded by the family of a Univ student, Jocelyn Devas, who was killed in a climbing accident on Mont Blanc in 1886. Today it provides opportunities and activities for youngsters from across the south London neighbourhood.

The Master was given a tour of the club by two young members, Serenity, aged 9, and Eva, aged 10, before chatting with club members, youth workers and trustees, about how to face up to the challenges of identity.

Univ will welcome visitors from the Devas Club back to Oxford on Sunday 29 January for the annual Devas v Univ football match. Further information on the event will be circulated closer to the time.

Find out more about Devas at devasclub.org or about Univ and Devas on our Univ in the Community page.
