Professor Rahman was one of two recipients of the annual award announced in November 2025, the other being Professor Sally Singh, Head of Pulmonary and Cardiac Rehabilitation at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

The President’s Award is presented to individuals in recognition of their significant impact on clinical respiratory care. Nominees for the award come from the BTS membership, with a Nominations Committee and the President deciding award winners.

Professor Rahman is a national and international expert in pleural medicine who plays a key role in UK research in his capacity as a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIRH) Senior Investigator and as the recently appointed National Respiratory Lead for the NIHR Clinical Research Network.

The results of his multi-centre randomised controlled trials have led to changes in practice and guidelines and his landmark studies, which have included publications in The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet, have resulted in national and global practice changes.

In addition to his academic work and holding important roles within the NHS, Professor Rahman has held a number of key positions within the British Thoracic Society.
