British Institute of Radiology appointment
Dr Nick Screaton BM, BCh, MRCP, FRCR (1987, Medicine), was installed as President of the British Institute of Radiology (BIR) on 18 September, in succession to Professor Stephen Keevil (1983, Physics). Dr Screaton is the third Univ member to have held this office, after Professor Keevil and Dr Stephen Golding, Emeritus Fellow.
Dr Nick Screaton is a consultant radiologist specialising in cardiothoracic radiology. His subspecialty interests include pulmonary hypertension, interstitial and airways disease as well as lung cancer screening.
He was Radiology Clinical Director in Papworth Hospital 2004–12, President of the British Society of Thoracic Imaging 2009–13, Royal College of Radiologist Faculty Board Member between 2015-2018 and RCR Council Member from 2019 to 2022, Vice President (Publishing) for the British Institute of Radiologists from 2016 to 2022, has been a council member of the European Society of Thoracic Imaging since 2017 and became Secretary in 2022.
Dr Screaton has an interest in clinical guideline development and has contributed to several BTS guidelines, including RCR MBUR. He has served terms as a standing member of the NICE Guidelines Updates (2014-2017) and NICE Quality Standards Advisory Committees (2018-2024).
He is the son of Dr Gordon R Screaton, Emeritus Fellow of the College and the brother of Professor Gavin R Screaton, a Professorial Fellow of the College and Head of the Medical Sciences Division at Oxford.
The British Institute of Radiology (BIR) is the oldest radiological society in the world. The origins of the BIR can be traced back to a first meeting held on 2 April 1897 to form “The X-ray Society”.
