New Year Honours 2026

Congratulations to the following members of Univ who were recognised in the King’s 2026 New Year Honours List for their extraordinary achievements and service.

Gideon Henderson - UN Ocean Conference 2025

Professor Gideon Henderson CBE
Professor Gideon Henderson, Senior Research Fellow and Professor of Earth Sciences, has been appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to Science.

Professor Henderson is an environmental scientist with expertise as a geochemist researching surface-earth processes related to climate, the carbon cycle and the oceans. He is also Chair of the Met Office Science Advisory Committee, the Senior Independent Member of NERC Council, and a Member of the Advisory Board for the UN Decade of Ocean Science. In addition to being Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford, between 2019 and 2025, he was Chief Scientific Adviser at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Professor Henderson said, “I’m delighted to receive this honour both at a personal level and because it recognises the critical importance of scientific evidence in setting national policy for climate, biodiversity and our stewardship of the environment.”

Professor Tamsin Mather

Professor Tamsin Mather OBE
Professor Tamsin Mather, Supernumerary Fellow in Earth Sciences and Professor of Earth Sciences, has been appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Volcanology and to the Promotion of Science.

Professor Mather’s work combines her expansive knowledge of volcanology/magmatism, atmospheric chemistry and paleoclimatology/stratigraphy. This combination of expertise enables her to approach problems ranging from the evolution of the Earth’s environment over its geological history to acute present-day volcanic hazards and air pollution events. Her work also encompasses the role of volcanism on other planetary bodies both within our solar system and further afield.

In addition to participating in a number of science festivals, TV and radio programmes, Professor Mather has collaborated on various children’s books and published her book Adventures in Volcanoland in 2024. Professor Mather said “I am very honoured to receive this recognition for my scientific work. I have been hugely privileged to work with some incredible colleagues throughout my career and across many disciplines and sectors. I am delighted to be able to use this opportunity to extend heartfelt thanks to them all and celebrate the important work they do.”

New Years Honours 2026 - Dan Corry OBE

Dan Corry OBE
Dan Corry (1979, PPE) has been made an OBE for Public Service. Dan is a Non-Executive Director of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, where he previously led an independent Review of Environmental Regulation. He is also Chair of the Carers Trusts, an organisation that works to transform the lives of unpaid carers through the delivery of programmes that increase awareness and influence policy. He recently published a collection of short stories based on his time as a special advisor in the last Labour government, entitled Tales of the Unelected.

Andrew Scott CB
Andrew Scott (1988, History) has been made a CB for services to Government and the Legislative Process. Andrew is Second Parliamentary Counsel at the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel within the Cabinet Office, where he is responsible for drafting government legislation for introduction into Parliament and advises the government on legal, Parliamentary and constitutional questions.

Kim Wilkie

Kim Wilkie CBE
Kim Wilkie, the landscape architect for the College’s Univ North development, has been awarded a CBE for services to landscape architecture. Kim studied history at Oxford and landscape architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, before setting up his landscape studio in London in 1989. After running his own practice for 25 years, Kim currently works as a strategic and conceptual landscape consultant.

Mr Peter Clark BEM
Peter Clark (1991, History) Head of 16-19 Funding and Financial Support Policy at the Department for Education has been made a Medallist of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) for services to Further Education.
