Schools Liaison
Here at University College, we believe everyone should have the chance to apply and thrive at Oxford, no matter their background. Our Schools Liaison and Access work works to level the playing field so students who may not have support through school or other networks can do so through us. We do this through various events and activities with schools, individual students, and supporters. We are linked with Staffordshire, Shropshire, and western Berkshire, but frequently hold events open to students from all corners of the UK.
The College is often referred to by students as ‘The Access College’ due to our history of being one of the top colleges for admitting students from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds. Between 2022 and 2024, we were in the top 3 Oxford colleges for admitting students from less advantaged areas (ACORN categories 4 and 5) and areas with low progression to higher education (POLAR quintiles 1 and 2), whilst 31.3% admitted came from Global Majority Backgrounds. We are proud to be the college where the first Black student graduated from Oxford (Christian Cole), and this history reflects in the modern day, where we have the second highest offer rate of all colleges to Black students between 2022 and 2024.
In addition to the events we provide at the College, prospective applicants are welcome to visit the College for free for a self-guided tour. Prospective applicants along with any accompanying visitors may arrive at the College entrance (Porter’s Lodge) to look around. The What3Words location for the entrance of the college is ‘///enable.trades.season’.
Prospective students may also be interested in visiting the College during the university Open Days to meet current students, tutors and admissions staff. A virtual tour of the College is also available.
Students keen to stretch their knowledge beyond the syllabus should explore our Staircase12 pages. Staircase12 is University College’s online information hub for students aiming high at school and thinking about applying to top universities. Here you’ll find plenty of material and “super-curriculars” to help you develop your interests, along with book reviews from students and tutors to help you “read around” your subject. Take a look at the Staircase12 pages or follow us on Instagram for all the latest information.

Opportunity Programme
In 2016 Univ launched an ambitious new scheme – the Opportunity Programme – to expand the number of UK students from disadvantaged backgrounds at the College. The scheme has run successfully for several years, providing places and academic support for four cohorts of Opportunity Programme students.
In 2020, following the success of the Opportunity Programme, a University-wide programme, Opportunity Oxford, was launched. Having had a pivotal role in its design and development, the College continues to be actively involved in shaping and participating in Opportunity Oxford.
Read below for more information about the historic Opportunity Programme and our ongoing involvement in Opportunity Oxford.
The University of Oxford has developed a programme to simplify communication between the University and all schools in the United Kingdom. This is so that each school in the UK has a first point of contact in the University and so we can more efficiently work with as many schools as possible.
Each term Univ offers set days on which schools can book to bring small groups of students to. These aim to challenge myths surrounding the University of Oxford and its admissions process, provide students with insight into studying at university, and allow them to meet and ask questions of current undergraduates.
We know how important it is that Oxford is made as accessible as possible.
A lot of Univ’s outreach with schools and students takes place in Oxford. We believe that making a visit to the College and meeting our current students in-person is the best way to get a feel for what it might be like to attend the University.
Some of Univ’s outreach events take place online. We understand that students interested in our events do not necessarily have access to the technology they might need to fully participate online. During the coronavirus pandemic, the College developed a Digital Access Award, to support students attending virtual events. This fund is being maintained to continue to support students attending future virtual events.
Eligible schools can also apply for a box of books to support students as they engage in super-curricular exploration beyond the school syllabus. See our dedicated
“One of the things that attracted me to Univ was the strong and long-standing commitment the College had to widening access. One way this has been demonstrated is through pioneering the innovative Opportunity Programme. We are very pleased to see an expanded version of the programme running successfully on a University-wide scale. I hope that this will have a significant impact, increasing the diversity of the student body.” – Baroness Valerie Amos, Master
Univ is now proud to be an active participant in Opportunity Oxford, a university-wide programme providing an academic bridging programme to up to 200 eligible participants.
