Visitor in the Creative Arts 2020

Visitor in the Creative Arts 2020Univ welcomes award-winning playwright, scriptwriter, short-story writer and journalist Clare Bayley as Visitor in the Creative Arts for 2020-21.

Born in Oxford, raised in Durham and now living in London, Clare worked as a theatre critic before doing David Edgar’s MA in playwriting at Birmingham University. Her first play, Northern Lights, was directed by Shabnam Shabazi at the New Grove Theatre. Her 2007 play The Container won a Fringe First and the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award. Since then her plays have been produced at theatres including the Young Vic, Hampstead Theatre, the National Theatre and internationally.

During her time at Univ Clare will be completing a new English version of the play Gabriel by 19th century writer George Sand.

Clare described how she felt about starting at Univ, “I’m very excited to be here at Univ, and despite the best efforts of the pandemic, I’m looking forward to running writing workshops and informal readings this term. Theatre was never intended to be socially distanced, but it’s more important now than ever, so we’ll work with the new reality and devise ways to operate. I’ll be posting info about times and dates of workshops and readings but in the meantime feel free to contact me by email or drop by my rooms in Radcliffe Quad 9.3.”
