Recognition of Distinction 2025

Univ Marina Rucsandra FilipUniv Fellow Dr Marina Rucsandra Filip, Tutorial Fellow in Physics, has been awarded the title of Professor of Physics in the University’s latest Recognition of Distinction exercise.

After graduating from the University of Bucharest, in Romania with a degree in Physics, Marina came to Oxford to embark upon a DPhil in Materials and Science, which she completed in 2015, and stayed on as a Postdoctoral Researcher at in the Materials Department at Oxford and Junior Research Fellow at Wolfson College. In 2018, she moved to the United States, as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and the Department of Physics at UC Berkeley. In February 2020, Marina joined the faculty of the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford as Associate Professor in Condensed Matter Physics and Tutorial Fellow in Physics at Univ.

Marina leads a research group which uses and develops new first principles computational modeling techniques based on density functional theory (DFT) and many body perturbation theory (MBPT). The primary focus of her research is to understand structural and optoelectronic properties of complex semiconductors, and to create strategies to engineer, design and discover new semiconductors for optoelectronic applications.

Marina said, “I am absolutely delighted to receive this recognition from the University. It is a great honour. I am deeply thankful to my research group, collaborators, and mentors throughout the years for working with me on exciting and challenging scientific questions, and for their steadfast support of my career.”
