Joanna Welsh (1991, Biology), Chief Risk Officer at hedge fund Citadel, has been listed for a second year in a row by Barron’s as one of the 100 Most Influential Women in US Finance.
The list, which is now in its sixth year, recognises women in top financial leadership positions who are helping to shape the future of the industry. It includes preeminent Wall Street executives, renowned investment managers, securities analysts, and powerful policy makers.
At Citadel, Joanna chairs Citadel’s Portfolio Committee and advises the firm’s investment professionals on risk tolerance levels across its strategies, businesses and the funds as a whole. Joanna was instrumental in Citadel being named Hedge Fund of the Year by prominent financial industry publication Risk.net, most recently in 2025.
In her inaugural appearance on the Barron’s list last year, the magazine described Joanna as “the lead risk watcher in a sea of risk takers,” and praised her “process-driven approach to risk management.”
With more than 20 years of experience in financial services and risk management, Joanna has also held senior risk positions at Tudor Investment Corporation, Commerzbank and Nomura. She is a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Financial Advisory Roundtable as well as being a member of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Foundation’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee.
Joanna said: “Barron’s recognition of my achievements in finance and contributions to Citadel, where I am Chief Risk Officer, is a profound honour and I am deeply humbled. I owe much of my success to the world class education I received from Oxford. It’s been invaluable.”
Joanna will be having a fireside chat with Baroness Amos, Master of University College, at the Univ in the City event in London on 16 October 2025.
