The Master in Conversation with Emma Tucker

On Tuesday 16 April 2024, as part of our 775 Celebrations, Baroness Amos, Master of Univ, invited Old Members, friends of the College, students, parents and carers of students and their guests to an “in conversation” event with Emma Tucker (1986, PPE), Editor-in-Chief of the Wall Street Journal. The event took place at the University of Oxford North America Office on Fifth Avenue in New York.

Isabella Crispino (2018, History and Politics) has kindly written the following report:

Amid the skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan, generations of Univ Old Members gathered for an insightful evening of conversation between Emma Tucker and Baroness Amos.

The conversation moved seamlessly from inspiring to sombre to funny – with several quips about the differences between English and American newsrooms drawing laughter from the transatlantic audience. A fascinating back-and-forth about the role of journalism in a world in which it is increasingly under threat underscored its vital importance. For democracy, Emma reminded us, journalism isn’t merely a nice-to-have–it is essential.

As the first female Editor in 134 years, Emma’s leadership marks a historic milestone for the Journal. Witnessing her engage in dialogue with Univ’s own trailblazing Baroness Amos was profoundly impactful. The significance wasn’t lost on the audience; together, they’ve shattered nearly one thousand years of male dominance in their fields.

A palpable sense of community enveloped the space as new connections were made and old ones re-kindled. Thank you to Emma, Baroness Amos and the team at Univ for providing such an enriching and memorable evening!
