College News
Team Univ: Town and Gown 2025
On Sunday 11 May, 38 students and eight staff members took part in the Town and Gown 10k for Team Univ. Read more about Team Univ’s Town and Gown performance here.
Ascension Day 2025
The College marked Ascension Day on 29 April with a performance by the Chapel Choir and the traditional “beating of the bounds” which began in the Front Quad and concluded in the Master’s Garden. Read more here.
HLA Hart Memorial Lecture 2025
The 39th HLA Hart Memorial Lecture was held on 22 May in the College Chapel. This year’s lecture was delivered by Professor Elizabeth Anderson from the University of Michigan. Read more and watch the a recording of the lecture here.
Musical manuscript waste
In the latest installment from Univ’s series of Treasures, we take a look at the a 15th Century missal repaired with parchment from an entirely separate music manuscript. Read more about this innovative repair work here.
Univ Ambassadors visit Devas Club
Two Univ Ambassadors, Laura Fulton (2021, Oriental Studies) and Elizabeth Stuart (2021, Classics) visited the Devas Club in London in April and joined them on a trip to Vauxhall City Farm. Read Elizabeth Stuart’s report here.
Summer Eights 2025
In May, University College Boat Club (UCBC) took part in Summer Eights. All members of the College were invited to a reception at the Boat House on 31 May to watch the final day of rowing. Bertie Coomber (2021, Chemistry), UCBC’s outgoing Vice President and Ciara Moore (2012, Physics) provided reports and reflections on the day’s events. There was also a reunion for the 2014-16 Boat Club members, followed by the Martlet Regatta on 1 June. Read more here.
Will Young visits Univ for BBC show
British pop icon and actor Will Young traced his family genealogy on the BBC show Who do you think you are? Will’s journey brought him to Univ, where he learnt more about the life of his grandfather Digby Young. Read more here.
Univ Online Talks: Patrick Rebeschini
Patrick Rebeschini, Tutorial Fellow at Univ and Professor of Statistics and Machine Learning at the University of Oxford, delivered an accessible and engaging talk which provided an introduction to the statistical thinking that underpins the multi-armed bandit problem – one of the foundational challenges in reinforcement learning. UCBC boat named in honour of Margaret Chamberlain
On 26 May University College Boat Club (UCBC) began their second Martlet Regatta by officially unveiling and naming their new Women’s first boat. The boat has been named in honour of Univ’s Women’s Boat Club founder Margaret Chamberlain (1979, Jurisprudence). Read the full story here.

Endocrine clinics in Poland
Zofia Makowska (2019, Medicine) has written a report following a visit to Poland to work in endocrine clinics earlier this year. The trip was funded by the Graduate War Memorial Scholarship. Read the full travel report here.

Fellows and other academics
•Professor Sarah Harper CBE, Univ Supernumerary Fellow, Clore Professor of Gerontology and Director of the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, was featured on BBC Radio 4 on 21 June discussing falling numbers in school enrolment and birth rates post pandemic (from 08:47:10). Listen to her insights here.
•Baroness Valerie Amos, Master of Univ, was a speaker at the University of Oxford’s termly Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Roundtable, convened by Tim Soutphommasane, the University’s Chief Diversity Officer. Baroness Amos spoke on the topic of “Making sense of debates about equality, diversity and inclusion” and participated in a Q&A session.
Old Members
•Dr Tin Hang (Henry) Hung 洪天恒 (2017, DPhil Plant Sciences) and friends explored the meaning of journey and distance in an evening recital at the Jacqueline du Pré Music Building in Oxford on 21 June.
•Rajdeep Sardesai (1986, Law) celebrated his sixtieth birthday and was recognised for his 36 years in journalism. Read more here.
•Martin Smith (1978, Engineering) was re-elected to Wiltshire Council in the local elections on 1 May as a Liberal Democrat and has accepted the role of Cabinet Minister for Highways, Streetscene and Flooding.
