1946 Summer Eights blade
A Summer Eights blade from Univ’s 1946 crew has been returned to College after being discovered in a London pub. Read more here.
The Mitchell Map
Learn about one of Univ’s treasures, The Mitchell Map. which was originally published in 1755 and depicts large parts of contemporary North America. Univ’s copy is believed to be the second edition, from around 1757. Read more here.
George Cawkwell Memorial Lecture
The Inaugural George Cawkwell Memorial Lecture took place in Oxford on 6 March. The lecture, given by Professor Paul A Cartledge, was followed by a drinks reception and dinner. Read more and watch the video here.

Jillian currently works across nine colleges, advising on environmental sustainability issues while also supporting the development of environmental strategies and interventions to promote sustainability. Fellows and other academics
• Dr Nikolaos Kanellakis, Stipendiary Lecturer in Pathology, and Daniel Erasmus (2024, Law, Finance) completed the London Marathon on 27 April. Both runners completed the race with impressive finishing times of 2 hours 59 minutes and 2 hours 48 minutes respectively.
Old Members
• Robin Allen KC (1969, PPE) was commissioned by the Trades Union Congress (with his colleague Dee Masters at the AI Law Consultancy) to draft a Bill for the regulation of Artificial Intelligence in the workplace. The Bill was published by the TUC on 18 April 2024. Read more.
• Rishabh Bhandari (2001, Jurisprudence) was invited by BCLP’s South Asian in Law Network for a panel discussion to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month.
• The Hon Mr Justice Martin Chamberlain (1991, PPE & BCL) has been appointed Judge in Charge of the Administrative Court List, a three-year appointment that runs to 31 August 2027.
• Professor Stephen Fleming (2003, Psychology with Physiology) was awarded the Royal Society’s Francis Crick Medal and Lecture in 2024 delivered the lecture in January 2025. Watch the lecture on the Royal Society website.
• Matthew Grogan (1991, Engineering and Computer Science) recently co-founded a web3 social media app called OpenChat which runs as a DAO (Decentralised autonomous organisation).
• Dr Thierry Hirsch (2011, Classics) was elected to the Consultative Commission on Human Rights of Luxembourg in 2024.
• Steven Hutchings (1975, Jurisprudence) joined the board of the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU) as a Non-Executive Director and Trustee in August 2024.
• Glenn Kolleeny (1976, Modern Languages – Russian) was a visiting lecturer on US law at the Kyiv School of Economics law faculty in autumn 2024.
• The Constitution Society published a paper by Dr Andrew McCormick CB (1975, Geology) on “The Constitutional Status of Northern Ireland” on 29 January 2024. Read more.
• Risham Nadeem (2012, History) contributed a chapter “Inclusive Design & the Pursuit of Intimacy: Finding Connection in the Modern World” (with Aidan Borer) to the Design Museum Magazine’s “Inclusive Design” issue (January 2024). Read more.
• Professor Fabrizio Nevola (1989, History and Modern Languages), Head of Art History and Visual Culture at the University of Exeter, has developed an immersive new app, HistoryScapes, for the National Trust, launched in January 2025. Find out more.
• Dr Alistair Sterling (2013, Chemistry) was appointed Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The University of Texas at Dallas in August 2024.
• Dr Petr Sulc (2010, Physics) was promoted to tenured associate professor at Arizona State University in May 2024.
