The Martlet Issue 10

martlet cover autumn 2019The Martlet issue 10 is now online, celebrating 40 years of women at Univ with a spotlight on the seven new members of the Young Univ Gallery. Hard copies have been mailed and pidged to the College community.

The issue includes a roundup of news about the College, including an introduction to the new development at Staverton Road: University College, North Oxford. Andrew Bell (1993, History), Senior Tutor, talks about how Opportunity Oxford inspired the University’s new admission scheme. Trips relating to nuclear fusion and Egyptology are covered in the first few pages. There are also updates on the activities of sports and societies at Univ, from UCBC to the Univ Players.

The 40 years of women at Univ theme is present throughout the issue with an article by Dr Laura Varnam, Lecturer in Old and Middle English Literature, about the “Women at Univ 1249-2019” exhibition, which explores the hidden histories of women at Univ in both academic and non-academic roles. Mother and daughter Lindsey Stewart (1979, Law) and Grace Mallon (2013, History) are interviewed by Isabel Edwards (2017, History) for the Univ Conversation segment, while Dr Catherine Pears enlightens us on the tools of her trade as Old Members’ Fellow in Biochemistry. We find more about Anna Cross (1988, PPE) and her role as Group Financial Controller of Barclays in “Leading Questions”. The issue ends with a walk around the quad with Lady Jill Crewe, discussing her most surprising moments at Univ and the advice she would give incoming and outgoing students.
