UCBC’s Oxford to London Row for Gloucester
In September, members of University College Boat Club (UCBC) will take on an incredible three-day challenge, rowing over 120 miles from Oxford to London, in order to raise funds for their training camp in Gloucester. Read more here.
Class of 2025 Graduation Reflections

Baroness Amos to chair maternity and neonatal investigation
It was announced that Baroness Amos, Master of University College, has been appointed by the UK Secretary of Health and Social Care to chair an independent investigation into maternal and neonatal care in England. Read more here.
A Univ voice in new Ashmolean trail
Dr Nikolaos Kanellakis, Stipendary Lecturer in Pathology, has contributed a voiceover to the Ashmolean’s new Voices of the Empire audio trail, which was created to accompany the Ashmolean’s reimagined Rome Gallery. Read more here.

Young Univ Drinks August 2025
Young Univ members and their guests attended Young Univ Drinks on 1 August at The Astronomer pub in London. The event provided an opportunity to meet the newly appointed Young Univ Ambassadors, who will act as representatives for the Young Univ community and be a point of contact. Profile: Mohamad Khodr Al-Dah
Mohamad Khodr Al-Dah (1998, Engineering) is the current President of the Institution of Structural Engineers. He has worked across the globe, with his career spanning Cairo, Cardiff, Seoul and, more recently, Dubai. You can read Mohamad’s profile here.
Profile: Natasha Edwards
Natasha Edwards (1997, Economics) is Managing Director of The Garlic Farm, which has been growing speciality garlic on the Isle of Wight for over 50 years. The farm, which employs 100 local people and offers educational outreach to schools, the general public and local businesses, recently received the King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development. Volcanology summer school in Portugal
Elo Wilkinson-Rowe (2024, Environmental Research) has written an account of attending the eight-day 2025 International Summer School on Geological Hazards on Volcanic Islands run by IVAR, the Research Institute for Volcanology and Risk Assessment, at the University of the Azores in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Azores in May. ISMSC 2025 in Kyoto
Alex Mapp (2021, DPhil Inorganic Chemistry for Future Manufacturing) has detailed his summer trip to to the historic city of Kyoto to attend the 19th International Symposium on Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry, where he also presented a poster. Fellows and other academics
•Dr Marina Rucsandra Filip, Tutorial Fellow in Physics and Professor of Condensed Matter Physics, has been awarded the title of Professor in the University’s latest Recognition of Distinction exercise.
•Professor Adrian Zuckerman, Emeritus Fellow and Professor of Civil Procedure, was appointed Honorary King’s Counsel (KC Honoris Causa) earlier this year. Read more here.
•Dr Emily Jones, Supernumerary Fellow in Public Policy, was recognised in the University of Oxford’s Vice-Chancellor’s Awards 2025. Dr Jones was Highly Commended in the Teaching and Learning Award category for her programme which equips students with negotiation concepts and practical tactics through innovative teaching approaches including case studies and simulations. •Professor Peter Magill, Professor of Neurobiology and Supernumerary Fellow in Neurobiology has been named Director of a new MRC Centre of Research Excellence in Restorative Neural Dynamics. The Centre will open in November 2025 and aims to transform the use of medical devices for the treatment of brain conditions including Parkinson’s, dementia, stroke, and epilepsy. Read more here.

•Dan Nackasha-Keyworth (2000, PPE) has embarked upon a round-the-world adventure, during which he endeavours to circumnavigate the globe without flying. You can follow Dan’s journey here.
•Dr Steven Parissien (1978, History) is to publish Another Round?, an exploration of Britain’s relationship with alcohol in twelve very different drinks. (August Books, 11 September 2025).
•Professor James McCullagh, Director of Oxford’s Mass Spectrometry Research Facility in the Department of Chemistry, co-led a project which provided evidence of honey in residues found in bronze jars excavated from a 6th Century BCE Greek shrine in Paestum, southern Italy. Read more here.
