Members of the College community attended a reception hosted by the Master, Baroness Valerie Amos, in Hong Kong during her trip to Hong Kong and Singapore in January 2026.

Samuel Lam (2022, DPhil Mathematics; WCR External Affairs Officer 2023-26) has written a report of the event.

During her recent visit to Asia, the Master of University College, Oxford, Baroness Valerie Amos, returned to Hong Kong for a drinks reception with members of the Univ community, following her previous visit to the city two years ago.

Generously sponsored by the Swire Group, the reception was once again held at the Sky Lounge of The Upper House, located in the heart of Hong Kong’s business district with sweeping views of the city skyline. The evening brought together Old Members, their families, and members of the wider Univ community, and I was privileged to attend as a current DPhil student.

The reception provided a welcome opportunity to reconnect with friends who had recently graduated and to meet alumni from across generations. It was inspiring to see how the shared experiences of life at Univ — from tutorials to formal halls — continue to shape our professional and personal journeys.

During the reception, Baroness Amos shared updates on recent developments at the College. Baroness Amos highlighted Univ’s continued commitment to improving access to education and fostering greater inclusivity. Among these initiatives is the Univ Beacon Programme, which supports students from underprivileged backgrounds. Baroness Amos also spoke about progress on the Univ North development, which welcomed its first residents this academic year, enhancing accommodation provision for students.

It was particularly encouraging to hear how Univ’s vision continues to inspire members of its community. One recent graduate shared how the College’s values had encouraged them to join the 1249 Society, supporting Univ’s ongoing initiatives for current and future members of the College.

The evening served not only as an opportunity to reminisce about our time at Univ, but also as a reminder of the lasting influence the College has on the lives of its members. We were honoured by the presence of the Master, Baroness Amos, as well as Felice Nassar and Harriet Bayly from the Development Office.

Our sincere thanks go to the Swire Group, not only for sponsoring the reception but also for their longstanding support for undergraduate students from Hong Kong. We look forward to welcoming Univ back to Hong Kong again soon.
