The Revd Canon Andrew Norman (1981, PPE) was installed as Suffragan Bishop in Europe on 2 March 2025 at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Gibraltar. His appointment to the role was announced in November 2024 and he succeeded Bishop David Hamid who retired in February 2025.
Prior to taking on his current position, Andrew has enjoyed a varied career within the Church. He previously spent time living and working in the Diocese in Europe, working in Malta for De La Rue, a commercial banknote printer. Following his ordination in 1996, Andrew completed his curacy at St Michael’s Paris, after which he was appointed Associate Vicar at Christ Church, Clifton in the Diocese of Bristol. Then, in 2002, he became the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Secretary for International, Ecumenical and Anglican Communion Affairs.
Between 2008 and 2016, Andrew was Principal of Ridley Hall theological college, before taking up his previous post as Director of Ministry and Mission for the newly formed Diocese of Leeds. In 2019, Andrew also published A Church Observed: being Anglican as times change.
Andrew said, “I’m delighted to be returning to the diocese where I served my curacy. Being Suffragan Bishop in this vast and fascinating diocese is an exciting as well as a daunting prospect. In partnership with other churches in Europe, there’s wonderful potential for nurturing Christian faith and witness. I’m really looking forward to coming alongside our chaplaincies in all their glorious diversity, so we can rise together to the challenges and opportunities ahead, in faith-filled and imaginative ways.”
As Suffragan Bishop in Europe, Andrew is now Chair of the Ministry Team of the diocese and the Lead Bishop for Safeguarding alongside other responsibilities. He is now based in Brussels, where he works with The Diocesan Bishop Right Revd Dr Robert Innes.
