2021 Chapel Choir Tour

It’s fair to say that the last two years have not been great for Univ Chapel Choir. With whole terms online, socially distanced rehearsals and a tour to Florence and end of term concert cancelled, it seemed as though there was little to look forward to for us in the near future. However, when we learned last month that Canterbury Cathedral was looking for visiting choirs to sing evensong, we jumped at the chance to organise a last-minute tour to Canterbury.

Members of the choir outside the cathedral in the sunWe performed a broad repertoire across the three evenings, and it was a particular pleasure to introduce the cathedral to some more modern pieces by female composers that we learned to mark 40 years of women at Univ in 2019. It was an amazing experience to perform in the nave of the cathedral; an incredibly beautiful space, with an equally wonderful acoustic. It was special to come together and sing as a group, and having had no congregation for the majority of last year, it was great to be able to sing in front of so many people. A rare benefit of singing in a post-covid world was that all of our services were recorded and live-streamed on the cathedral’s YouTube channel, meaning that our services have racked up over one thousand views across the world!
