Bruce Balden

Univ Old Member Bruce Balden (1974, Maths) was among the cast of 70 Up, the final instalment of the groundbreaking Up documentary series, which followed the lives of ten boys and four girls across the UK from the age of seven in 1964. Produced every seven years, the series concluded with 70 Up, which premiered on 15 September. Both the individual films and the series received numerous accolades.

In 21 Up, Bruce was studying mathematics at University College. Some of Bruce’s scenes for the series were filmed at the College. He is seen having a tutorial with Professor Michael Collins on the non-constructibilty of the heptagon.

After graduating, Bruce worked in insurance before becoming a mathematics teacher in London’s East End. By 35 Up, he was on sabbatical in Sylhet, Bangladesh, teaching mathematics and English and helping local teachers develop courses. He later returned to London to continue teaching in the East End.

Shortly before 42 Up, Bruce married a fellow teacher. Director Michael Apted departed from the established seven-year format to film the wedding, which was also attended by Neil Hughes. Between 42 Up and 49 Up, Bruce and his wife had two sons. He later took up a post at St Albans School in Hertfordshire, where he taught until retirement.
