Welcome to Univ – Undergraduate

We’re looking forward to welcoming you to University College, or Univ as it’s more commonly known.

The following pages provide all the information you should need prior to your arrival in Oxford. However, if you have any questions please contact either Admissions@univ.ox.ac.uk (Undergraduate admissions) or undergraduate.studies@univ.ox.ac.uk (Academic Office).

Welcome from the Master

A very warm welcome to Univ. I am delighted that you are joining us this year. Univ has a long and rich history with a commitment to fostering a broad based college experience anchored in academic excellence. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds but all have several key things in common: intellectual curiosity, a seriousness about their subject and an ambition to do well. We want you to get the best, and make the best, of an Oxford education.

Univ combines the old and the new. Our beautiful old buildings on the High Street have been modernised with our gardens providing lovely spaces in which to reflect and gather. And at our Staverton Road site we have just opened our new buildings, including a nursery, gym and a cafe.

Our High Street site is in the centre of the city, minutes away from the main libraries, lecture halls, laboratories, shops, restaurants, parks, and the river. There is ample opportunity at Univ to get involved in music, drama, sport, politics, community work and much else besides. Our hope is for you to learn from each other as well as from your tutors and lecturers. The spirit is relaxed, supportive, friendly and also ambitious. You can be yourself at Univ.

I look forward to meeting you.

Arrival at Univ and Welcome Week

The following website provides useful information for students coming to Oxford: ox.ac.uk/students/new and we strongly recommend you read it carefully.

Student Registration Checklist 2026.

Events will be organised for new students to help welcome you to Oxford and to Univ.  Some of these events will be held in person, some on-line and some will be completed in your own time via distance learning. Welcome Week is run by the Academic Office, with input from many tutors and staff, as well as from the undergraduate (‘Junior’) common room (JCR).  The activities arranged for you in Welcome Week will provide many opportunities for you to get to know the other new students and the rest of the College.  New undergraduates should aim to arrive in College by 4pm on Sunday 4 October; the JCR welcome committee will be on hand to greet you.

The centre of Oxford is very busy and difficult to navigate by car. If you arrive by car, you are welcome to stop on Merton Street or Logic Lane for five minutes only to unload your luggage. Once the car has been unloaded, you must park elsewhere in the city (the nearest car park is St Clements). Once safely parked, you can return to your room to start unpacking and making it feel like home. Current students will be on hand to help you unload your belongings and take them to your room.

Directions to University College can be found here.

Information for freshers wishing to enter the High St site via Logic Lane.

In order to reach the College without passing through a filter you may use the Ring Road and then enter Oxford via Iffley Road (A4158) or Cowley Road (B480). Each road ends at a roundabout known as the Plain. At this roundabout continue straight ahead. If travelling from Iffley Road, this is the second exit from the roundabout. If travelling from Cowley Road, this is the third exit from the roundabout. This exit brings you across Magdalen Bridge and into the High Street. Go straight through traffic lights, and then almost immediately, at the Eastgate Hotel, turn left (looking out for cyclists) into Merton St. Continue forwards, and follow the road round a sharp (and blind) right turn (which you can see around by using a mirror mounted high and to your left that you should see as you approach the turn). About 100 metres after you turn right along Merton St, turn into the third (narrow) entrance on your right. This is Logic Lane. Please enter and follow instructions. Please note that you will need to unpack your car immediately and then remove it from Logic Lane, exiting the High Street via the Plain.

Details about traffice filters restrictions can be found on the Oxfrodshire County Council website here.
