Online Chapel Services sample

Univ ChapelWelcome to these online chapel services from Univ. These are services that we recorded and posted during term time in 2020, and that we are continuing to record and post during term time in 2021.

Most of these recordings are of Choral Evensong, as that is usually our principal weekly service. Towards the bottom of the page you will also find recordings of our Advent and Christmas Carol Services  from 2020(or with an accompanying image gallery, on our Univ Christmas Carol Service news page), and recordings of Sung Compline (at the very bottom of this page).

Our earliest recorded services were made in Trinity Term 2020. College was operating remotely, and students recorded themselves in their homes, singing solo, before another student edited their recordings to form the services that you will find below. Our later services, from Michaelmas Term 2020 onwards, were recorded in the College Chapel, with choir members singing together in a socially-distanced way. Services from Trinity Term are shorter versions of Choral Evensong than those from Michaelmas Term onwards. All services, except Compline, include a sermon.

Choral Evensong

Choral Evensong is a service from the Book of Common Prayer. Most of the service that you will hear sung consists of texts in the form in which they have been used since the seventeenth century, when our College Chapel was built.

Most of the service is based on the Christian Bible, and it was written to help people to pray together.

Whether or not you consider yourself a person of religious faith, or a person who prays, we hope that these recorded services will be a useful resource for you. So here are some different ways in which you might approach them:

  • As a space for reflection in which you can let the words and music flow over you, or engage with them as actively as you wish.
  • As a chance to be transported to another place, through what we hear and experience together, wherever we may be.

Participating in Evensong online may take a bit of getting used to, as may Evensong itself, which may be new to many who listen to it here.

However the service is a form of worship that has stood the test of time. Others have found that this combination of words, music and space is helpful to them, and we hope that it may be helpful to you too.

Were you at Evensong in our Chapel, our candles would all be lit. Perhaps you might like to light one at home as we begin?
