Clare Carlisle in conversation

Thursday, 27 November 2025, 5pm
10 Merton Street Lecture Theatre, University College, Oxford

Organised by Professor Joe Moshenska, Univ Beaverbook and Bouverie Tutorial Fellow in English

What place can philosophy hold within a human life? And what kinds of life give rise to philosophy? These are among the questions that Clare Carlisle, Professor of Philosophy at King’s College London, asks across her work. Her books include biographies of Kierkegaard and George Eliot, studies of habit and of Spinoza’s religion, and, most recently, Transcendence for Beginners (Fitzcarraldo, 2025), which interweaves philosophical reflection with her own experiences from Cambridge to the Himalayas. Throughout her writing Professor Carlisle persistently ask how we live out the questions that matter to us most. She will discuss her work with Joe Moshenska, Professor and Tutorial Fellow in English.

There will be post-event drinks. Please register for the talk and drinks here.
