The Reverend Bill Sykes, College Chaplain from 1978-2005 and Emeritus Fellow until his sudden death in 2015, was an extraordinary man who left an indelible mark on College and generations of students who participated in his ‘Reflection groups’, sang in the chapel choir, played sport, or just knew Bill as a kind friend and unerring supporter.
The College has established The Reverend William Sykes Memorial Fund to continue Bill’s legacy by providing perpetual funds in support of two of Bill’s passions: the Chapel Choir and College sport.
The Sykes Memorial Fund will be an endowment that will provide steady funding that will help resource the annual budget of College’s Chapel Choir, an institution that Bill established shortly after his arrival at Univ. Income from the Fund will support the activities and needs of the Chapel Choir including the purchase of new music and music folders, assistance for extra musical tuition, and partial sponsorship for members to undertake regional/overseas tours. If in a given year extra monies are available, the College would direct those funds to assist another of Bill’s passions: College Sport. Univ’s less financially secure sporting clubs would be able to apply for funds to further their ambitions and encourage their members’ participation.

Tributes to the Revd Bill Sykes
“It was people like Bill who made Univ in my time – 1981 to 1984 – so pleasant a place to be. I was not a chapel-goer, indeed not a believer, but Bill was a friend who took an interest and stayed in touch.” – Kris Gledhill
“Bill had more impact on me than anyone else I met in my three years at Univ. A rare gem, one of life's truly good people. I will miss him dearly.” – Nic Isham
“Bill extended the same care and kind counsel to the summer program from SMU, for close to thirty years. We will miss him greatly.” – Michael Holahan
