Recognition of Distinction 2014

Univ crestCongratulations to nine of our Fellows who have each had the title of Professor conferred upon them in the 2014 Recognition of Distinction Awards, made by the University of Oxford. They are:

  • Professor Bill Child (Tutorial Fellow in Philosophy and Vice-Master; Professor of Philosophy)
  • Professor Nicholas Halmi (Margaret Candfield Tutorial Fellow in English; Professor of English and Comparative Literature)
  • Professor Peter Howell (Tutorial Fellow in Mathematics; Professor of Applied Mathematics)
  • Professor Tamsin Mather (Supernumerary Fellow in Earth Sciences; Professor of Earth Sciences)
  • Professor Angus Johnston (Tutorial Fellow in Law; Professor of Law)
  • Professor Tom Povey (Tutorial Fellow in Engineering; Professor of Engineering Science)
  • Professor Nick Yeung (Sir Jules Thorn Tutorial Fellow in Psychology and Schools Liaison Fellow; Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience)
  • Professor Oliver Zimmer (Sanderson Tutorial Fellow in Modern History; Professor of Modern European History)
  • Professor Daniel Grimley (Tutorial Fellow in Music at Merton College and Senior Lecturer in Music at University College; Professor of Music)

Candidates for the awards, which have been made annually since 2010/11, have to have a strong record of achievement in three specific areas:
Research – ongoing research characterised by a significant influence on their field of study, and of a high order of excellence and of international standing;
Teaching – effective teaching for the University and/or College(s); and
Good citizenship – involvement and competence in University and/or College administration.
