Economics can only be studied at the undergraduate level at Oxford as part of a Joint Honours School, of which the Honours School of Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE) is the largest.
Economics is a fascinating but demanding subject in that it requires a broad range of skills. Students are, of course, expected to develop clear, cogent and well-structured arguments in their work, but they are also expected to master technically demanding material and to apply this knowledge to understanding the real world. Hence, economics is particularly suited to students who have strengths across the traditional science and arts subjects, and we recognise that this may or may not be reflected in the subjects offered at A-level or in other examinations.
While no particular subjects are required at A-level, Mathematics is very useful and is therefore strongly recommended. At Univ, we put particular emphasis on grooming students in the analytical and mathematical methods central to modern economic analysis. We hope to impart to students a skill that is best understood as an ability to analyse economic issues by capturing the essential features of economic situations in formal mathematical models. Hence, students who enjoy discussing and understanding real-world issues but who also enjoy rigorous logical and mathematical reasoning will find a Univ economics education most engaging.
