Univ-specific Graduate Scholarships for entry in 2012

University College will consider all applicants to whom it has offered a college place for the following Univ-specific graduate scholarships and studentships, to be awarded on a competitive basis, for entry in 2012.

Students currently reading for the M.Phil, B.Phil, M.Sc or M.St in Oxford and applying to begin a doctorate are also eligible for the studentships.

Candidates must apply to the University by the 1st or 2nd deadlines (subject to University Admitting Body [UAB] restrictions) in the normal way. There is no separate application procedure for the scholarships. Awards will be announced in late spring 2012.

Loughman Scholarship

*Duration: Up to three years

*Value: Up to £4,000 p.a.

*Eligibility: Open to graduates who are outstanding in their academic field and who, in addition, can demonstrate that they will make significant contributions to College life through the quality of their extra-academic pursuits (arts, sports, community service etc.).

Chellgren Scholarship

*Duration: Up to three years

*Value: Up to £4,000 p.a.

*Eligibility: Any graduate degree, but with a preference for Economics.

Bartlett Scholarship

*Duration: Up to three years

*Value: Up to £2,500 p.a.

*Eligibility: Any subject; applicants must have the intention to read for the D.Phil. North American preference.

Scholarships in partnership with University Departments, Faculties and Divisions (including the Clarendon College-linked scheme)

A number of scholarships will be offered in partnership with University Departments, Faculties and Divisions. Procedures for considering applicants for these scholarships vary. In order to be considered for these awards applicants must either list University College as their first-choice college, or indicate on their application form that they would be willing to move college to gain a scholarship:

Humanities Division-linked awards

University College proposes to co-fund two divisionally linked AHRC (UK Research Council) awards for D.Phil. entry. These provide full funding (fees and stipend) to eligible candidates for the period of fee liability. The scholarships will be awarded as part of the Humanities Division AHRC studentship competition. The relevant scholarships are as follows:

University College-Senior-AHRC Scholarship

Open to outstanding students who apply for DPhil entry to any of the courses for which the College admits in the Humanities Division (see http://www.humanities.ox.ac.uk/), and who are eligible for award of an AHRC studentship.

University College-OMT-AHRC Scholarship

Open to outstanding students who apply for DPhil entry to any of the programmes for which the College admits in the Humanities Division (see http://www.humanities.ox.ac.uk/), and who are eligible for award of an AHRC studentship.

Clarendon Awards (Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division and Social Sciences Division)

University College contributes each year two College-linked awards to Clarendon Fund competition. For entry in October 2012, there will be one University College-Clarendon Scholarship in any of the courses for which the College admits in the Maths, Physical and Life Sciences Division (see http://www.mpls.ox.ac.uk/), and one in any of the courses for which the College admits in the Social Sciences Division (see http://www.socsci.ox.ac.uk/). Both award-holders will receive a fully-funded scholarship. All nationalities are eligible for Clarendon Awards.

War Memorial Scholarship (Medical Sciences Division)

The War Memorial Scholarship: is open to new EU students who have secured a fees-only studentship in open competition and have been offered a D.Phil. place in a department in the Medical Sciences Division (see http://www.medsci.ox.ac.uk/), for entry in October 2012. One scholarship is available, offering a stipend at the UK Research Council level. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of outstanding academic merit, is restricted to programmes of study to which University College admits, and is only tenable at University College (i.e. students admitted by another college will be required to migrate to University College in order to take up the award).

There is no separate application process, however to be eligible candidates must have submitted their application for graduate study by 6 January 2012 (Application Deadline 2 in the Medical Sciences Division). Departments in the Medical Sciences Division will be asked to nominate eligible candidates for consideration by the Divisional Funding Panel and by University College.

Department-linked awards

University College has agreed to co-fund three departmentally linked awards for DPhil entry. These provide full funding (fees and stipend) to eligible candidates. The relevant scholarships are as follows:

University College-Earth Sciences Scholarship

3.5 years’ funding in partnership with the Department of Earth Sciences: Open to outstanding students who apply for DPhil entry to the Dept of Earth Sciences (see http://www.earth.ox.ac.uk/), and who are eligible for award of a NERC studentship. The scholarships will be awarded as part of the Department of Earth Sciences annual studentship competition.

University College-Clinical Neurosciences Scholarship

3.5 years’ funding in partnership with the Department of Clinical Neurosciences: Open to outstanding EU students who apply for DPhil entry to the Dept of Clinical Neurosciences (see http://www.ndcn.ox.ac.uk/), and who gain a competitive fees-only award (e.g. MRC). The scholarships will be awarded as part of the Nuffield Department of Clinical Sciences annual studentship competition.

University College-Economics Scholarship

4 years’ funding in partnership with the Department of Economics: Open to outstanding students who apply for MPhil and DPhil entry to the Dept of Economics (see here). The scholarships will be awarded as part of the Department of Economics annual studentship competition

Swire Scholarships

*Duration: Up to three years

*Value: College and University fees, maintenance, and economy return fare between Taiwan and London.

*Eligibility: All applicants must be Taiwanese nationals intending to read for a D. Phil. In one of the following areas of study: Biochemistry; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth Sciences; Engineering; Infection, Immunology and Translational Medicine; Mathematics; Physics; and Experimental Psychology.

Application procedures and documents

Eligible candidates wishing to be considered for a Swire Scholarship must follow the application procedure detailed in the application information pack. Applications for the graduate programme must be submitted by 6 January 2012 for Medical Sciences, and 20 January 2012 for other subjects.
