Postgraduate Scholarships & Studentships

Graduate scholarships and studentships for entry in 2010

(1) Univ-specific Graduate Scholarships:

University College will consider all applicants who have nominated University College as their first choice college for the following Univ-specific graduate scholarships and studentships, to be awarded on a competitive basis, for entry in 2010. To be considered for these scholarships and studentships, candidates applying for the D.Phil (PRS stage) or M.Phil/B.Phil must name University College as their first choice college on their application form for graduate study to Oxford University (see Graduate application information on the Graduate Admissions section of the University website).

Students currently reading for the M.Phil, B.Phil, M.Sc or M.St in Oxford and applying to begin a doctorate are also eligible to apply for the studentships subject to the conditions specified above.

Candidates must apply to the University by the 1st, 2nd or 3rd deadlines (subject to University Admitting Body [UAB] restrictions) in the normal way. Awards will be announced in April 2010.

Old Members’ Trust Graduate Scholarship

  • Duration: Up to three years
  • Value: Up to £5,000 p.a.
  • Eligibility: Any subject. Applicants must have the intention to read for the D.Phil.

Senior Scholarship

  • Duration: Up to three years
  • Value: Up to £7,000 p.a.
  • Eligibility: Any subject. Applicants must have the intention to read for the D.Phil.

Loughman Scholarship

  • Duration: Up to three years
  • Value: Up to £4,000 p.a.
  • Eligibility: Open to graduates who are outstanding in their academic field and who, in addition, can demonstrate that they will make significant contributions to College life through the quality of their extra-academic pursuits (arts, sports, community service etc.).

Chellgren Scholarship

  • Duration: Up to three years
  • Value: Up to £4,000 p.a.
  • Eligibility: Any graduate degree, but with a preference for Economics.

Bartlett Scholarship

  • Duration: Up to three years
  • Value: Up to £2,500 p.a.
  • Eligibility: Any subject; applicants must have the intention to read for the D.Phil. North American preference.

Class of 58 Scholarships

  • Duration: Up to three years
  • Value: Up to £4,000 p.a.
  • Eligibility: There will be one scholarship in the arts, and one in the sciences.

(2) Scholarships in partnership with University Departments, Faculties and Divisions (including the Clarendon College-linked scheme)

A number of scholarships will be offered in partnership with University Departments; procedures for considering applicants for these scholarships vary. Details are posted here as they become available:

Cawkwell Scholarship in Classics

  • University College and the Faculty of Classics are jointly offering one graduate studentship in Classics (all branches, including Classical Languages and Literature, Ancient History, Classical Philosophy and
    Classical Archaeology) to be awarded for the first time with effect from October 2010. The scholarship will be open both to D.Phil. applicants and to M.St./M.Phil. applicants who are firmly committed to going on to the D.Phil. The value of the scholarship is £8,000 per annum, for up to three years.
  • There is no separate application process: all Classics applicants will be considered automatically for all relevant awards. The Cawkwell Scholar will be offered a place for either the M.St./M.Phil. or D.Phil., as appropriate, by University College and membership of the College will be a condition of the award.

Clarendon Awards

  • University College contributes each year two College-linked awards to international students, in partnership with the Clarendon Fund. For entry in 2010-11, there will be one University College-Clarendon Scholarship in any of the courses in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences for for which the College admits, and one in any of the courses in the Humanities for which the College admits. Both award-holders will receive a fully-funded scholarship.

War Memorial Scholarship

  • The War Memorial Scholarship is open to new EU students who have secured a fees-only studentship in open competition and have been offered a D.Phil. place in a department in the Medical Sciences Division, for entry in October 2010. One scholarship is available, offering a stipend of £13,689 per annum The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of outstanding academic merit, is restricted to programmes of study to which University College admits, and is only tenable at University College (i.e. students admitted by another college will be required to migrate to University College in order to take up the award).
  • There is no separate application process, however to be eligible candidates must have submitted their application for graduate study by 8th January 2010 (Application Deadline 2 in the Medical Sciences Division). Departments in the Medical Sciences Division will be asked to nominate eligible candidates for consideration by the Divisional Funding Panel and by University College.

(3) Swire Scholarships

  • Duration: Up to three years
  • Value: College and University fees, maintenance, and economy return fare between Taiwan and London.
  • Eligibility: All applicants must be Taiwanese nationals intending to read for a D.Phil. in one of the following areas of study: Biochemistry, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Immunology, Mathematics, Medicine, Physiology, Physics, Psychology.
